20 Years after, Imola Tribute

1994-2014

The event organised by Formula 1 Passion and the Enzo and Dino Ferrari Racetrack is promoted by the City of Imola and the Ayrton Senna Institute, from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Motor sport fans around the world on the 1st of may 2014, mark the 20th anniversary of the death of one of Formula One’s greatest ever drivers, Ayrton Senna. Friends and family hold a memorial service at the Imola race track for Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, the other driver killed on what is known as one of the darkest weekends of racing in the sport’s history.

Imola-2014Senna scored some great wins at Imola, and visited the top step of the podium at the venue no fewer than three times: 1988, 1989 and 1991 .

The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the classic Italian racetrack that sits on the outskirts of the sleepy town of Imola, is arguably the most appropriate place to commemorate the life and times of the great Ayrton Senna, exactly 20 years after his death – over the weekend of 1 to 4 May.With Senna family members as well as current and former grand prix drivers in attendance, a moment of silence was held at exactly 14:17 CET, while thousands of fans looked on. Fernando Alonso said simply: “For a lot of us, he was our idol.”

Thursday’s events at the track began with a parade in honor of Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, who died in a crash during qualifying the day before Senna’s passing. Many fans laid flowers at the statue of Senna  that was erected on the inside of the corner at which he crashed fatally on May 1, 1994.
